Blog Evaluation

Looking at all my work I believe my strongest pieces of work in my portfolio is my written work / marketing work. This work exceeds my personal achievements as I put so much work into being forward thinking and diverse in work, trying to come up with distinctive and new ideas that show my skills in a certain way. Creating my own brand and being able to promote this work is definately one of my strongest piece is my portfolio. I have developed this my using my visual merchandising skills and producing my own shop window based on my branded theme ‘Blurred Lines.’ My magazine editorial is a very strong piece of work as well.
There a few elements of my portfolio which I have personalised to suit me and my way of working. I did this by using my initiative and producing work based on my career choice. I created a body of work based on Fashion Marketing and Communication – this includes; my promotional campaign, photography, my own brand commercial, my personal fashion blog, and magazine editorial. All this works shows my passion for fashion marketing, you can clearly define the different strengths from this work to my design work.

Weakness in my work are shown through my designs and textile pieces. I find designing and textiles very boring and repetitive – it’s almost one part of the fashion industry I don’t want to work in. you can tell the difference between my design work and my written work – it’s a lot stronger. However, all my design work and mixed media work has all been produced or scanned through by photoshop – I could improve my work by trying to create some of these pieces by hand to show diversity.

I have put exceptional amounts of effort and time to make sure this project is to my own professional standard. I have made sure every piece of work is made to same standard and makes my skills shine through the best pieces of work. My time has been managed well – I have produced a portfolio of my best work, a reflective journal and a folder of research and inspirational thoughts in depth.
I have a folder along with this blog, showing all my inspirations and more detailed break down of my portfolio as a whole. Alongside this I have annotated why I haven't included certain pages in my E-Portfolio.

Fashion Promotion and Styling

In our portfolio, we had to include our fashion promotion & styling project. We had to choose a collection and a store to create our own promotional campaign. I choose to study the store ZARA enticed with Street Style – for my promotional campaign I included;
  • Business Card
  • Logo
  • Swing Tag
  • Press Release
  • Look Book
Advertisement

This is my own advert I have created for my own promotional campaign as my theme ZARA Street Style AW17. My advert was based on a new collection.
I wanted to put my own photography in the background, the picture I used I didn’t like at first purely because the light was shining on one of the models and it didn’t look effective. However, fading out the picture made it look better and a lot more effective.
I added the logo I made for Zara in the top left hand corner which looks quite effective as its going across my photography and the white canvas. I have also advertised my look book within the small print on my advert. I am pleased with my outcome of my advertisement, I think it stands out quite a lot.
Business Card

This is another business card design which I much prefer and I have chosen as my final piece. I much prefer this business card because I have used a picture in the background, which is the same picture as the front of my look book but in black and white. I have still used my logo and the same detail on the back of the business card apart from it’s on a black background.
Logo

This is my logo I have created as part of my promotional campaign for my Zara Street Style collection.

The original logo for ZARA is extremely plain as it is literally just the title stating ‘ZARA’. So, for my campaign I need to make my logo look slightly edgier. So, I simply got the standard ZARA sign and in the original font; I started messing around with it on photoshop using different brushes and techniques. I simply drew a cross underneath the sign and I really liked it. It’s very simple and uneven but it makes it look quite distinctive.
Swing Tag

This is my final swing tag design. In the end, I used a street style picture from my photoshoot faded out in the background with my logo on top. I did this so it goes with my promotional campaign. I think my swing tag looks effective and simple. I have added the sizes of the certain garment underneath which cover the sizes in different countries including; United Kingdom, Europe, United States, and Australia. The back of my swing tag is very plain just black and white, this is so it doesn’t distract the information. I got this inspiration from the Topshop swing tags. The information on the back of my swing tags include; ZARA logo, line number, barcode, price, and sizes. I am overall happy with the outcome of my swing tag, it goes with my promotional package well.

Press Release

This is my press release for my own promotional campaign which is all about Zara Street Style AW17. I have kept this very simple so it stands out; I have used the lines going down and across the page as I have used these on my look book which look quite cool. I have used my logo I made else well. I have written the press release as promoting my new collection and promoting look books in store.
Look Book

I went to shoot a photoshoot in Birmingham which was in digbeth were there is a lot of graffiti on the street and as my theme was ‘Street Style’ this was a perfect location. We also went to the ground of Birmingham university to take some shots by the autumn tree to display my trend is Autumn / Winter. I took all my picture on an iPhone 6. When making the production of my look book I came across a lot of different problems and I had to do a lot of planning for each page. To send my look book off to be printed I had to create a look book of 22 pages so I had to add some blank pages and more pages full of pages.

Metallic Addict Designs

In my portfolio, we had to include work from year one, so one of the projects I decided to include was our Sustainability project which I have renamed ‘Metallic Addict.’ I choose to include a mood board and designs for this theme as I love the bright colours involved – as its iridescence involved.

These are my final designs they are a lot neater and more professional than previous.
For this design board, I have used the same background and bottom border as my mood board to keep everything consistent. I have added a skin tone colour to my models so they more efficient and stand out more from the background. The garments I have designed have been filled with patterns from bright iridescence patterns. I am happy with the title of this of the design board as well. I decided to leave the faces blank so it doesn’t distract my designs.

Metallic Addict Mood Board

In my portfolio, we had to include work from year one, so one of the projects I decided to include was our Sustainability project which I have renamed ‘Metallic Addict.’ I choose to include a mood board and designs for this theme as I love the bright colours involved – as its iridescence involved.

This is my final mood board for the theme ‘Metallic Addict’ inspired by sustainable fashion. As my title is all about metallic I thought I would highlight metallic fashion through picture on my mood board. I have 3 squared images on this mood board but they have been broken up by being different sizes / layers and pattern background. I like the font of my title for this mood board, its funky and quirky which screams sustainable fashion.

Life Drawings

In year one we studied fashion illustration, in one of the modules we had to create life drawings from watching a live model. I wanted to record my life drawing in my portfolio, however the drawings I drew last year were horrendous and so small in a way I couldn’t possibly improve them. So, after going online and finding inspiration I found some live model images which I could redraw the silhouette. First, I drew them on paper, scanned them in and went over them on photoshop while adding the small details in neater.

Overall, I am happy with how my life drawings from been produced. Considering what they were like last year I’ve made huge improvement as I’ve learnt a whole lot of new skills. Editing my life drawings on photoshop made them look a lot more outlined and structure. I like the hair of my models and I really think it helps finish my drawings.

Earthy Minerals Designs

For my portfolio, I have included work created in year one, one of the project I have included is my trend design project called ‘Earthy Minerals.’ I have put a trend board and a range of designs in my portfolio to support this work. I liked this project earthy minerals as you can create elegant designs from the flow of the sea. There is a lot opportunity for exploration in this project.

This is my final design board to go with my trend board. I have used the rocks from my trend board for my design to be on top of – I really like this. I still have used the same figure template as it goes with my theme, I have filled the hair in black to define the models and the black really goes with the rocky colour. Each design is different and all has a different on them. I have pulled out patterns from various images online based on the theme ‘Earthy Minerals’ and inserted them into the garments.

Earthy Minerals Mood Board

For my portfolio, I have included work created in year one, one of the project I have included is my trend design project called ‘Earthy Minerals.’ I have put a trend board and a range of designs in my portfolio to support this work. I liked this project earthy minerals as you can create elegant designs from the flow of the sea. There is a lot opportunity for exploration in this project.

This is my final mood board and its completely different for all the rest. I thought as I’m trying to display the theme ‘Earthy Minerals’ to many images can look tacky. As there is only so much sea and pictures of mountains I can put in until its look crowded. So instead I decided to create a trend board – I used one picture of the sea and another of some rocks. I smudged them together to create a waved effect. I gathered all the colours to do with this theme to add the different colour palettes in my trend board.

My Personal Blog

For my portfolio, I have decided to showcase my personal fashion blog which has been up and running for a year own. I blog about all things fashion, beauty, travel and food, my blog is called ‘Chelsey Ocean.’ My blog has developed a lot over the year, I paid £26.00 to make my blog look more professional and up market.
I am very proud of my blog and all the work that has contributed towards it – I found it tricky to find a correct layout to highlight my blog.

The way I have laid out my blog in my portfolio is by including my introduction. I choose to involve my introduction as it’s a brief explanation of why I created my blog, facts about me and ways of contacting me. I pulled some of the facts of my side bar on my blog and inserted them in a unique way on the left side of this page, these include;
-          Instagram
-          Pinterest
-          Approved Blogger
-          Popular Posts
I have included social media symbols that I have links to in my blog. I am pleased with the outcome of this portfolio page and pleased I have been able to include my blog.

Mixed Media Inspried Stitch

In my portfolio, I must include some type of mixed media work. I have created to pieces one on photoshop and the other sewn then edit on photoshop. Both these pieces have been taken from magazines as inspiration.

The first piece of mixed media work I produced last year in year one in our mixed media lesson. I found my inspiration from a picture in a magazine article. I stitched the outline of the models on calico then cut out the garments and found relevant fabrics to put underneath. I was very happy with the outcome of this work and I found it quite easy to create. For my portfolio, I wanted to include this piece with an edit photoshop version as well. I wanted to recreate it to look different.

This what I created from my fabricated mixed media. As my mixed media was made on calico I looked quite boring so I decided to change the background. Of course, I wanted to change the background to the streets of my favourite fashion capital city. I used a picture of the streets in New York – I have aligned them on the zebra crossing. I went over some lines as well to define them as the stitching is quite faded.

Transparency Designs

It took quite a few attempts to finally decided how to draw my designs. I wanted to create my designs on photoshop – which by this point id never done design on photoshop before. My first attempt was horrific.

This is my final designs based on my transparency theme. Already, from the first two design boards to this design board there is a huge difference and improvement. I have added a background which is very delicate and doesn’t distract the detail in the designs at all. Within my designs, I have decided to define the ‘line’ as a very distinctive element of my knees. The figure template is the same however I have edited each model to tell a different story. I have mainly adjusted the feet / arms / facial expression. When colouring in the garments I only added a slight tad of colour and faded patterns out.

Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of my final design I have made huge improvement from my first design board. This moodboard especially goes with my mood board as I have taken colours and patterns from my mood board and interpreted it in my designs. I am happy with my choice of font and title alignment.

Transparency Mood Board

For my portfolio, I have included my own personal design project. This is where I have chosen my own theme and create a series of designs and a mood board. The theme I chose was Transparency.
The reason I chose this theme was because it’s not very common & there’s a lot of interesting colours and patterns you can draw into your designs. The colours are very delicate which allows me to explore different designs.

This is my final mood board for my personal project. In my opinion this mood board is a very strong piece of work, I am happy with the use of images and there placement. The mood board 100% looks better and more consistent in colour. I have added the title ‘transparency’ in the centre of my mood board – I like the use of font and alignment.

Palmer / Harding Editoral

In our portfolio, we had to include a magazine editorial based on an inspired designer of our choice. I choose to study the designer / brand Palmer / Harding. They are designer who have their own collection with St Martins. I chose to base my editorial on them because Palmer and Harding’s work has a huge impact on my freedom of slavery theme, their collection are very much within my colour palette as they use very dull nudes and burnt orange colours. Their garments are very baggy and loose almost like wrapped clothing. I created two different editorials my first attempt and the second was my final and very improved one.

My final editorial, I am very pleased with the outcome. I think the choose of images in the background make the editorial look quite strong as they really go with my text and title. Having my editorial over two pages makes it look so much better. The imagery in this editorial is a lot clearer and looks a lot more colourful. I only included one quote so it doesn’t look crowded.

Blurred Lines Visual Merchandising Board

I made this poster so I could put in my shop window. This post is advertising our new brand coming soon, it is trying to promote our 20% off the new collection called ‘SS17 ADDICTIVE RAVER.’ I tried to use different photos instead of the ones of the other board. I was very happy with the way it turned out and it looks great with my shop window.

Blurred Lines Shop Window (visual merchandising)
For my brand project, I want to create something for my portfolio which is different and fresh. After a lot of thinking about different ideas I wanted to include some visual merchandising in my portfolio – from this I have created a shop window based on how my store would look on my ‘Blurred Lines’ theme. I found the shop window template online and fill it with wall decorations, manikins, posters, and garments all created using my initiative. I am so happy with the outcome of my shop window.
After evaluating all my work connected to this brand project ‘Blurred Lines.’ I am very happy with the whole outcome of each piece of work, I have tried to be forward thinking and show a diverse range of skills. Majority of this work has been edited and produced through photoshop, photoshop has always been my strong suit so I’m proud of how successful this has turned out.

Blurred Line Photography Board

For my company campaign, I conducted my own photoshoot which relates to my theme. I used UV paint and LED light to make it glow in the dark. I wanted to create a drugged effect – make my model look ‘high’. I was so happy with the outcome of my photoshoot it really reflects my theme I was trying to portray.

From my photoshoot, I create these two photography boards. I have included both in my portfolio – the first one is more of a collage of all my photos, this one portrays the involvement of drugs and alcohol, the board pretty much shows the side effect of taking illegal substances. For the second board was just to display some of the best photos in my photoshoot – as for the background I used the same picture / pattern for my campaign board, customer profile board & others.

Blurred Lines Campagin Board

Blurred lines campaign advert
This is my campaign advert board – which is basically a mood board which is promoting my new brand advert called ‘Blurred Lines.’ I loved creating this board as I could explore all the bright colours and patterns created by the flashing beam lights. With some images, I duplicated them and faded them to create a blur effect which play on the eyes. I did this to the writing on this campaign board as well but tripled them.

Blurred Lines Introduction

Blurred Lines Development

As I am hoping to study Fashion Marketing at university I didn’t want my whole portfolio to be dedicated to design and mixed media work. So, I decided to highlight my own Marketing / Promotion based project. With my personal project, I want to include fashion promotion / advertising / visual merchandising / photography all in one.

To start with I had to come up with my own theme which was going to be based on a new store ‘coming soon.’ I want to choose a theme with bright colours and throb lighting creating blurs. So, I based my theme around raves and nightclubs to addition to this my customer profile would be quite wild, attend raves and takes drugs. From this my theme was finally titled ‘Blurred Lines.’ As well as gathering together a lot of research I have created;

-          Blurred Lines Mood / Promotion Board

-          Customer Profile Board

-          My own photoshoot

-          Photography Board

-          Blurred Lines Shop Window (Visual Merchandising)
-       Poster for Shop Window
My customer profile for my new brand 'Blurred Lines.'

This is my customer profile board for my new store campaign.
This board highlights the key elements of my customer profile who would shop in my new store ‘Blurred Lines.’ This is a womenswear shop so I would be directing my advertisement to girls. Each picture on this board tells a story;
1.       This picture is of a hotel / hostel – people who shop at my store would most likely go to hotels like this after partying.
2.       This is a rave – my customer attends to raves / nightclubs quite frequently
3.       This is a picture of an uncovered girl smoking – my customer will be very confident and out spoken and most likely smokes.
4.       This is a picture of a cartoon picture of someone taking drugs – my customer is someone who takes drugs / illegal substances while partying.
5.       This is a picture of what my customer would probably look like when attending raves. As this is a very mainstream look.

Mixed Media Inspried By A Magazine Cover

In my portfolio, I must include some type of mixed media work. I have created to pieces one on photoshop and the other sewn then edit on photoshop. Both these pieces have been taken from magazines as inspiration.
This was my final mixed media piece. The first picture I have drawn from the magazine image inspiration. I really like the outcome of my drawing and the hair gives the image such a extravagant touch.
The second piece is the exact same drawing but has been filled with colours and patterns just to add some colour to my drawing. I am quite happy with the outcome of this and the other mixed media piece.

Buisness X Street Fashion Photography

Whilst I have been at college I’ve conducted various photoshoots for a lot of different theme. There were two photoshoots that I couldn’t pick between for my portfolio it was either between my last year Earthy Minerals shoot or a new photoshoot called Business X Street.

This was the outcome of my inspiration board which I am very happy with as a first attempt using photoshop. I used a lot of different tools to create this board, such as; copy, paste, lasso tool and the cloning tool.
This is the final inspiration board – which I think is very successful as a first attempt at photoshop and I believe I have shown a variety of different skills in photoshop in the piece of work.

We had redo a photoshoot based on our year one ‘earthy minerals’ outfit. My photoshoot last year was successful. I have taken the photos from last year and created an inspiration board through photoshop in my folder. However, as we had to redo the photoshoot to improve it, I decided to not use my year one outfit and to create my own theme to develop my own photoshoot.
My theme I decided to go for was Business wear made quirky called (Business X Quirky.) I had my model wear all black and white clothing, elasticated hemmed trousers, white shirt, Adidas trainers and a black Drop Shoulder coat. I also made my models makeup very distinctive especially her eyebrows I made it show a unique expression.
After a lot of consideration, I have decided to include the Business X Street Style in my portfolio. In my opinion I think this photoshoot looks a lot more professional. I like the fact the photography is in black & white as its portrays the theme more.

Freedom of Slavery

For my portfolio, I had to include my final major project work. I have developed all this work over a series of different projects. We had to decide on a theme and create a body of work to go with it – I decided the name of my theme and collection will be called ‘FREEDOM OF SLAVERY.’ I have decided this because I want my collection to show a diverse in modern clothes with inspirational words on.  I am trying to get the message across that slavery is completely wrong in every way and how freedom and equality are human rights. No matter what age, gender, race, religion every single person in this world is truly equal and shouldn’t be treated differently no matter what.  My collection shows a clear theme and colour palette – I have found the inspiration for my designs from different films surrounding the slavery topic and exhibition I have visited. The pages I will include in my portfolio are;
-          Freedom of Slavery Mood Board
-          Freedom of Slavery Colour Palette
-          Freedom of Slavery Designs
-          Freedom of Slavery Line Up

My third page in my portfolio is my Freedom of Slavery mood board.

After evaluating all my designs, I have finally come up with the conclusion of my final 3 designs I will be making for my collection. As well as this I have evaluated all my research and decided the name of my theme and collection will be called ‘FREEDOM OF SLAVERY.’ I have decided this because I want my collection to show a diverse in modern clothes with inspirational words on. I am trying to get the message across that slavery is completely wrong in every way and how freedom and equality are human rights. No matter what age, gender, race, religion every single person in this world is truly equal and shouldn’t be treated differently no matter what. My collection shows a clear theme and colour palette – I have found the inspiration for my designs from different films surrounding the slavery topic and exhibition I have visited. I will be creating two womenswear designs and one menswear design. I have created my own working drawings from using a techniques book to help, however they have all been drawn on photoshop.

My second page in my portfolio is my Freedom of Slavery mood board.

This is my final mood board. This mood board literally has three images on but looks SO much better; it literally has about a thousand of words just in one picture. In the mood board, I have Photoshop skills like; polygon lasso tool, magic wand tool, cloning tool, and a few more. The background I choose for this mood board, I thought was very delicate, I love how the colours are very faded like an old effect.

This page is my Freedom of Slavery Colour Palette page

All the colours I have chosen as part of my colour palette for my final major project on the theme ‘Freedom of slavery’ are very basic. The colour are very dull and not very up-lifting. I watch various films to see how the costume designers interpreted clothes when slavery occurred. The colours bland, dirty brown and different shades of nudes have been seen as very popular for costumes. I have tired to pick a mixture of different colours relating to my theme, I have chosen seven colours for my colour palette. These included; Sandstone, Forest Green, Gold, Maple, Black, White and Umber. These colours all really correspond together and make my design stand out.
